BLAGOEVGRAD CITY OVERVIEW:

Blagoevgrad city is located in southwestern Bulgaria. Blagoevgrad population is about 70 thousand as of 2011. The city lies on the banks of the Blagoevgradska Bistritsa River.
Blagoevgrad is home of two universities:

The South-West University "Neofit Rilski"
The American University in Bulgaria - known as one of the best and most prestigious universities in Bulgaria.

The city of Blagoevgrad offers variety of indoor and outdoor things to do. As we mentioned above, the city has 2 universities making it a student city which is not only great for outdoor activities, but also for clubbing, and hanging out.

Go skiing in Bansko during the winter

Bansko is a popular ski resort not only in Bulgaria, but also in Europe. Lots of expats and locals from all parts of Bulgaria come to ski during the winter season. The resort offers so many activities that can satisfy any taste and wants.

Art Shop Hand Made, Sofia
Arts and Craft Shop in the center of Sofia is one of the best art spots in Sofia to pick up souvenirs from Bulgaria. The range of handicrafts is very large, from soaps to beautiful rugs. There you can find really unique crafts created with attention to detail. The owner Elizabeth speaks good English and will give you a very warm welcome on arrival at her shop. The fairy world that the owner has created with her own hands is impressing. The place is a small oasis in the dynamics of the city, where everything is made not only by hands, but with a magic wand that could bring you back to your childhood. the place is recommended to visit if you are around the NDK (National Palace of Culture) area in Sofia downtown.

Flea Market, Sofia
Close to the Alexander Nevsky church you will find this small flea market. Stalls selling lots of old 'tatt' and good stuff from icons to badges and old soviet militaria, you can also find many icons, decorations, old stuff, stamps, old clocks. If you are on the way to the cathedral on foot then you'll probably pass by anyway. The sellers generally speak English well and are willing to negotiate. It is a great spot to pick up some vintage silver jewellery (much cheaper than the airport).

Vino Orenda Wine Shop, Sofia
The store offers a wide variety of carefully selected Bulgarian wines of a high quality. Moreover, the atmosphere is very pleasant and the owners are so friendly and always helpful with their expertise in recommending the right choice of wine, depending on the preferences (whether for a gift or for a personal use at home). It`s not hard to find this unique place near The Russian monument in Sofia. Once you enter the shop you will feel like you found Aladin`s cave. It's fantastic wine shop selling small Bulgarian producers. The owner is very knowledgable and takes the time to explain about the Bulgarian wine. There you can also find a great variety of Bulgarian wines from the big producers. Eco-way "Bride" (Neviasta) is located on the main road between the town of Smolyan and Pamporovo resort and offers outstanding views, which you can see only in the Rhodope Mountains. The place where you can stop the car will recognize by the great arch that leads to the monastery at the foot of the path. There are three junction – for the monastery "Sv.Panteleymon", for Smolyan fortress, and the right trail for eco-way "Bride" (Neviasta).
The trail is easy, refined and is suitable for people of all ages. Its total length is 900 meters and the transit time is approximately 2 hours. The time required is longer for the simple reason that every few paces in front you will find amazing views and just you couldn't stop to enjoy them. The entire trail is dotted with signs for the diversity of flora and fauna that occurs in this region. There are also several places with benches and tables for picnic.

The rock massif Bride is one of the most famous rocks in the town of Smolyan and the Rhodope Mountains. The legends of its name are many. But the most popular is that at a time when Bulgaria was under Turkish rule, the most beautiful girl from the town of Smolyan was requested for a woman of great Turkish dignitary. The girl agreed, but asked before she left, to get on those rocks and the last time to see his birthplace. This story ends tragically, because the girl jumped off the cliff because she didn't want to become a bride of oppressors. From there comes the name of the rock – Bride (Neviasta).

Besides the wonders of nature, which you can enjoy on this route will reach attraction with Alpine trolley (cost 8 BGN downhill; 4 EUR; 5 USD ) and playground with swings. The International bagpipe contest is held every year at the beginning of August local families have gathered on the Ilinden Meadows near Gela Village in the Rhodopes to chat and rejoice. The tradition has been kept alive until this very day and it has preserved the songs of the Rhodope Mountains.

The history of this amazing bagpipe contest dates back to 2002. The Bulgarian country dates back to 681 and a lot of the traditions have been preserved during the past almost fourteen centuries. The bagpipe is one of the many traditional instruments that present the Bulgarian culture to the world even nowadays.
The goal of the bagpipe festival is to promote the authentic Rhodope folklore, history and traditions. The Bulgarian contestants must play the pieces on low-voiced bagpipes.
The contestants are divided into three age groups and have to meet the following requirements:

First age group – up to 14 years of age – perform a piece of their choice up to 5 minutes long;
Second age group - between 15 and 20 years of age – must perform a slow and a fast piece up to 6 minutes long;
Third age group - over 21 years of age – perform a slow and a fast piece up to 7 minutes long.

The performances are rated by a competent panel of judges. There are cash prizes and material awards, and each contestant receives an honorary diploma. The festival has become so popular for the past 14 years so that it has become an international festival. Bagpipers from Japan, Holland, Hungary, France, and Great Britain have participated in the contest. The number of contestants varies between 40 and 60 every year. The youngest bagpiper who participated in the contest was 5 years old, while the oldest was 85 which is pretty amazing, isn't it? People from all parts of Bulgaria gather together on the Ilinden Meadows and have a lot of fun while playing on bagpipes. The amazing festival of "1000 people in traditional costumes in one place" happens in Razlog on the second day of Easter. This event held in Razlog reveals the folklore abundance and variety on the territory of the municipality. The festivals gathers more than a thousand people, dressed in traditional costumes in the very downtown of Razlog.

The Bulgarian national costumes are one of the major characteristics in the Bulgarian folklore, traditions, and music. Every region of the country has its traditional costumes with exclusive motives that cannot be found anywhere else.
When looking into the Bulgarian costumes, you need to understand that there is a certain code that has to be followed in the ornaments which in the past carried information about the family origin and history, as well as, for the specific region it originated from. Every Bulgarian costume has its own message and meaning.
Traditional costumes in Razlog are preserved and passed on from generation to generation. Costumes with 100 years of history are preserved in some homes in Razlog. All year round master tailors create new costumes; their greatest joy is to recognize their creation when people wear it in the big ‘horo’ (traditional Bulgarian round dance) which usually takes place in the downtown area of the town.

SHOPPING MALLS IN BULGARIA - PART 1

Paradise Center, Sofia
A super european shopping mall that has everything you might think of - designer shops, boutiques, sport shops, beauty shops and many many more! Worth to visit for shopping, for looking around and spending your day. Very modern and fancy mall. There are aproxymetly over 200shops and restorants, also there is nice 3D cinema. There are lots of places to enjoy a meal or coffee and also easy to get there by taxi.

Now the subway goes directly to Paradise Center which makes it much more accessible. Take the blue line to Vitinha and exit into the mall!

Visit the mall on a cold day to learn more about Bulgarians.

Serdika Center, Sofia
Big mall full of best brands. It's cheap in terms of West Europe prices. All the known names are here. If you want the whole experience, you'll need several hours to screen the place and decide your shopping. A nice place for all family and couples. You can find almost all brands and stores.

There is huge food court. It offers a lot of choises to eat and a nice cafè-bar. This is the place to buy stuff for all your needs, including supermarket. Also there is vast parking space.

However there is no cinema or other kind of entertainment. I recommend it, to go with your car do your week's shopping, pay bills, etc.

Mall Of Sofia, SofiaThis is a great Mall and also one of the largest malls in Sofia. It's located within walking distance to the city center (about 15 minutes), there is also public transport access (if you don't like to walk).

There you can find everything u need at a fair price. It contains of some nice cheap stores along with the usuals (H&M etc..). The food court is extensive, you can find anything you want there. It also includes a great IMAX cinema, that is very cheap for "Westerners", free parking and a fun arcade.

One more interesting thing is that if u buy for more then 100 Leva, you will get a FREE ride in the taxi so make sure to pass by the information desk before you leave !!

Grand Mall, Varna
The mall is quite new, very big with plenty of different stores and international chain stores. The prices are moderate. The food area is big and offering various types of foods including ethnic bulgarian restaurants and fast food. There is good food court and cinemas on the top floor. Parking is free!

We just found out about a great event happening in Bansko this weekend. The International Fitness Convention Bulgaria(IFCB) is a 3-day fun event with a great program of workshops, seminars, and fitness classes.
The International Fitness Convention Bulgaria happens 2 times a year. Once in the sea city of Varna and once in Bansko. The Bansko IFCB version will start this Friday(11 November) and the last day of the convention is 13th November(Sunday).
