ECO-TRAIL "WHITE RIVER"
At the bottom of Stara Planina Mountain, about 8 kilometers from Kalofer is the beginning of an incredibly beautiful mountain route - trail "White River". It is situated along the White river in the National Park "Central Balkan" and was built specifically for tourists. It is located 151 km from Sofia and 66 km from Plovdiv.
Walking by the trail we will pass through the Kalofer's Male Monastery. The road will take us to some of the most beautiful and safer parts of "Djendema" sanctuary.
The length of the path "White River" is 1830 meters. It takes about two hours to go from the start point until the end of it. Once we get near the monastery, we take the asphalt road on the right hand side. this will take us to the camp "White River". There a small restaurant where you can get something to eat or drink. From this place starts our walk down the eco-path. As we follow the steep slopes and climbs, we reach the first of the eight oak bridges. It is also longest one.
The bridges pass along the most beautiful and wild places in the mountain, over rapids and waterfalls whose falling water creates a fearsome sound and create magnificent views that are hard to forget. Following the path we'll get to the first pavilion where we can get rest and prepare for the steepest part of the walk. We go up the road and we get to the last bridge from which can be seen the вaterfall "Raiskoto Praskalo".
The route has a very good infrastructure and offers interactive educational programs for children and adults - general and specialized or so called route "Dendrology" (the science of tree species). In the area there are many informational boards presenting the flora and different animal species. We shall see dashboard that is representing how the footprints of the most common animals in this area look like. In the region of "White River" can be found over the half of the plant species in Bulgaria, nearly 213 medical herbs and 11 unique species of plants that can be found only there. One of them is the Rhodope haberlea.
Eco-trail "White River" is definately one of places in the central part of the mountain that is worth to visit. Along the River there are a lot of places for picnics, as well as numerous places to rest. The visitors of the trail have the opportunity to sleep in the camp "White River" or in one of the numerous guesthouses and family hotels in Kalofer. For fans of the nights under the open sky there is the possibility of hiring tents and camping equipment.
