DAY TRIP TO FORTRESS OF OVECH

Picture

The ruins of the ancient fortress of Ovech are located on a plateau, overlooking the town of Provadia. It is situates 53 km west of Varna and 410 km east of Sofia. The fortress is mentioned under different names in the historical chronicles and during the years it was inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, and Turks.

The fundamentals of churches, dwellings and gate towers can be seen on the top, also a well, 79 meters deep and there is still water in.

There is a bridge connecting the fortress with a plateau where you can continue to walk through and enjoy the beautiful views open from there.

There is also a eco trail which pass by the fortress of Ovech and leads to the Rock monastery situated in "Shashkanite". The monastery has ten cells, cut into the vertical steep rocks at a height of 30 meters and it is quite interesting to see. It was inhabited back in 12 - 13th century. The path is very pleasant easy 40 minutes walk which goes along the edge of the plateau, suitable for both children and elderly that offers awesome views of the area.

How to get there:
The fortress can be reached both by car. From the road to the village of Dobrina there is a dirt road leading to a small dusty parking place where you can buy tickets (2 leva for adults and 1 lev for kids) and a small souvenir shop is located. Steps, cut in the rocks will bring you to the top.

If you choose to go there on foot take the Ovech eco trail which starts from the city center of Provadia.  It is a nice hiking trail through the forest and there are benches along the way which makes it suitable for the elderly, as well.
