TOP 5 THINGS TO DO AT ERMA RIVER GORGE

The beautiful gorge of Erma River (Tran Gorge) is situated at about 3 km from the town of Tran and is among the most appealing historic points in this part of the country. It is also one of the 100 National Tourist Sites in Bulgaria. The gorge is around 100 meters long, and around 5 meters wide in its tightest part. The view which opens from the eco way takes away the breath of tourists with its great shake arrangements in the waterway gorges, frothy waterfalls and water limits.
Here is our list of things to do there:

1. Make a walk through the eco-trail
The whole eco-trail at the gorge of Erma River is 13 km and takes about 8 hours. However, you may do a shorter walk with a smaller diameter for about 1 or 2 hours. If you plan to visit it I would recommend to go there on sunny, dry weather and be wearing comfortable shoes. Despite the alternating steep ascents and descents through the path the route is not heavy, and I would say that is suitable for both experienced hikers and beginners and amateurs. There is also a tunnel that was artificially carved into the rock during the Second World War by the Germans. The plan was from there to pass a light rail, which should have go to the Rila Monastery. Unfortunately shortly after the tunnel was created that idea was dropped.

2. Make a barbecue
On a 5-acre land, located near the "Gorge", the local government built 12 pavilions with barbecues for the tourists. There is also a new car park and information center. The facility is totally free of charge and open every day from the year. You can simply go there, bring your food, make your own fire and enjoy the beautiful area near the river. If you like camping you can also bring your tent and sleep under the stars.

3. Enjoy a bike tour
If your are more like sport person the area is perfect for bike tours. The short distance, about 75 kilometers, and relatively the flat road allow the route Sofia - Tran to go with your bike. As if you decide to choose this type of transport, I suggest the following key points - Sofia, Bozhurishte, Breznik, Tran River Gorge. From Bojurishte to Breznik there are amazing lawns, almost no people to bother you, and not a bad place for a picnic or simply to rest. Overall the track is quiet, you will not be disturbed by cars.

4. Experience the great climbing routes
The rocks rise to a height of 150-200 meters and form a picturesque canyon, and there is s great number of climbing routes there. Every year, climbers from all over Bulgaria meet at the rocks. In 1960 was set the traditional Alpine meeting with the founding climbers from Pernik Alpine Club. After 1990, however, the annual organization of the event is canceled - and so until 2007, when, thanks to Tran climber Taco Mladenov, the tradition is resumed. In the next two years the interest greatly increasing - in 2008 participants were 40 and in 2009 their number exceeds 100.

5. Try a traditional 100% organic homemade jam and honey
At the beginning of the eco-path you will find two or three stalls with own bio production of the local people. It is typical for the region there: a little wooden souvenirs and a bunch of homemade honey and jam.

How to get to the gorge of Erma from Sofia

1. By car
The distance from Sofia between 70 and 82 kilometers, depending on which way you choose. Whichever route you prefer according to Google Maps it will take the same time - about an hour and twenty minutes. The road itself there is decent (some drivers even define it as good), with low traffic.

2. By public transport
Getting there is possible even if you do not have your own car. There are shuttles that leave from the bus station in Sofia called Ovcha Kupel and for a little more than two hours they reach Tran. H

Here are the hours:
From Sofia to Tran : 8:00, 10:30, 15:00, and 19:00 every day.
By Tran Sofia (weekdays): 6:30, 10:30, 14:00, 16:40 and 18:40.
