The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a magnificent Eastern Orthodox cathedral and is one of the largest in the world. Based in the heart of Sofia city(the capital of Bulgaria), St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built in Neo-Byzantine style. It serves as the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria and it is one of the very symbols of Sofia and a primary tourist attraction.

The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral occupies an area of 3,170 square metres (34,100 sq ft) and can hold 10,000 people inside. It is the second-largest cathedral located on the Balkan Peninsula, after the Cathedral of Saint Sava in Belgrade.

Its most striking feature is its great, gold-plated dome that’s 45 metres high. The cathedral was built only in the early 20th century in memory of the 200,000 Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and Bulgarian soldiers, who died in the Russo-Turkish War, 1877–1878.

Inside, it’s vast size can hold 10000 people. The interior is lavishly decorated with marbles of many colors, great mural paintings, and 82 icons. In the crypt of the church there are many iconic religious art paintings. A church as great as this usually has a relic – this one has what seems to be Alexander Nevsky’s rib.
There are quite a few ways on how to get to the Alexander Nevsky cathedral, but here are our tips for getting to the church:
